Cumberland County fathers and their daughters raised funds to help care for people battling cancer while dancing the night away at the 2nd annual Daddy Daughter Dance on March 25, at the Greenup Municipal Building.
Dance organizers recently donated $1,525 to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Regional Cancer Center, more than doubling the amount raised during the dance last year. The event was originally organized in support of Greenup resident Stacey Carl, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2015. Residents of his hometown decided to help him fulfill a wish on his bucket list when he declined a personal fundraiser.
Overwhelmed by the tremendous turnout that first year, dance organizers decided to make it an annual event. “We’ve all been touched by cancer in someway, whether it’s a family member, or someone from the community, or the work place. It is nice to be able to give back in any way to help ease their journey,” dance co-coordinator Megan Nelson said. In 2016, the event generated $1,000 for the SBL Regional Cancer Center, including $700 raised the night of the dance. Carl, who was recently elected mayor of Greenup, was touched to be able to donate the funds to help others.
