Fit Girls Running and Reading Program Returns This Summer

April 9, 2014 3:23 p.m.

Girls are encouraged to learn the importance of fitness and building brain power this summer with Fit Girls and Sarah Bush Lincoln.

Girls who have just completed grades third, fourth and fifth are encouraged to participate in the Fit Girls program. Fit Girls uniquely combines training for a 5K race, with reading and nutrition education. Thirty spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is overseen by Sarah Betts, Sarah Bush Lincoln Healthy Kids Educator.

The cost of the five-week program is $10 and includes a water bottle, an age-appropriate book and free entry in the Run for the Bagel 5K race sponsored by the Mattoon Area Family YMCA set for July 19.

Participants in Fit Girls will meet from 9 am to 11 am as a group twice a week at the Mattoon Public Library. During these meetings the participants will discuss a book they are reading together, enjoy a healthy snack, complete a low-impact workout and begin training for a 5K.

The program beings Monday, June 16, and will continue each Monday and Wednesday through Wednesday, July 16.

“Fit Girls provides a wonderful opportunity for young girls to learn about setting goals, developing character and staying healthy as we work toward our goal of completing the Run for the Bagel 5K on Saturday, July 19,” Sarah Betts, program coordinator, said.
